Our thoughts go out to those affected around the world
Before we talk about markets, it’s worth recognizing the obvious: war is, first and foremost, a human tragedy. The loss of life, the fear, and the uncertainty endured by millions of people far outweigh any financial ripple. It’s a stark reminder that behind every headline are lives permanently changed—something no chart or market metric can ever fully capture. We, here at Delphi Advisers, are hoping for an expedited and humane end to this conflict, sparing as many lives as possible.
Market reaction to Iran strikes
After a weekend that saw the United States and Israel launch coordinated strikes on Iran, an escalation that has markets waking up edgy and global headlines screaming. As far as we can tell, the primary market concern surrounds the potential sustained disruption around the Strait of Hormuz, a narrow waterway off of the coast of Iran that facilitates approximately 20% of the worlds daily oil supply flows. Could this be a long term problem? Of course! A sustained disruption would likely result in increased energy prices which may contribute to producer and, ultimately, consumer price increases. However, the likelihood of a long term oil supply constraint pushing the world into recession or even some type of stagnation is very low. Today’s selloff is the kind of moment that tests investors’ nerves far more than it tests the global economy or market’s long‑term trajectory.
As history repeatedly shows, markets digest geopolitical shocks far faster than the news cycle does. The infographic below lays out nearly a century of evidence: conflict grabs the spotlight, but markets have an almost stubborn habit of stabilizing, recovering, and ultimately marching higher. In other words, while the world over reacts in real time, disciplined investors should be taking the long view—not the bait.
